In a ceremony on October 17, 2023, the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) bestowed upon Dr. Yang Chai the prestigious Goldhaber Award for outstanding contributions to the field of oral and systemic health. Established in 1989 to honor former HSDM Dean Dr. Paul Goldhaber, the award is the school’s highest honor.

The celebration included a keynote address delivered by Dr. Chai titled, “From a Clinician to a Clinician-Scientist: My Journey in Craniofacial Development and Regenerative Medicine,” covering Chai’s illustrious career, spanning decades from his time as a maxillofacial surgeon to his current roles as a University Professor, the George and MaryLou Boone Chair in Craniofacial Molecular Biology, Associate Dean of Research, and Director of the Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology.

Chai took his experience treating patients with craniofacial birth defects and used that as the foundation for his transition into the field of research, focusing on developmental biology and regenerative medicine. Over the years, he has mentored countless students and made many influential discoveries. His research links back to the clinical side of health science to develop better treatment options for patients.

Congratulations on your well-deserved award, Dr. Chai!
